Bigleaf Hydrangea

Hydrangea macrophylla

A large, fast growing, very long lived, deep rooted, suckering shrub reaching up to 6 x 6 feet or more rarely 13 x 13 feet that is native to Honshu Island of Japan. Most cultivars reach a maximum height of 7 feet unless otherwise noted.
The deciduous leaves are elliptical, up to 9 x 5 inches and glossy mid-green above; bright green below.
The flower clusters are typically up to 9.5 inches across.
Hardy zones 5 to 10 in full sun to partial shade on moist, fertile, well drained soil. Very salt tolerant, it often grows along the ocean in the wild. This Hydrangea along with H. serrata can be influenced in bloom color by soil acidity. The more acidic the soil, the more blue the flowers on some cultivars. For most vigorous plants with the largest blooms, it is recommended to prune out 2/3 of the shoots starting from the oldest and least vigorous in late winter. Older stems that have exhausted all their vigor can also be removed at the base immediately after flowering.
Insect pest and disease problems are rare. Bigleaf Hydrangea root easily from stem or leaf bud cuttings taken from late spring into mid summer, under mist 1000 ppm IBA in 3 to 5 weeks. Cuttings root during most of the year.
