Achlys triphylla
A fast rhizome-spreading perennial, reaching up to 1.3 feet, that is native to Vancouver Island and southwestern British Columbia; south to northern California. It is native to coniferous woodland in the Cascades and Coastal Mountain ranges. It makes a great groundcover for shady sites.
The rounded leaves that encircle the stem are composed of 3 broad, closely-spaced leaflets. Each leaflet is up to 4.5 x 3 inches in size.
The white flowers are borne on dense, narrow, upright spikes during late spring.
They are followed by deep purple berries.
Hardy zones 6 to 9 in partial to full shade on moist, fertile soil. Very drought tolerant once it is established. It is also rarely grazed by deer or rabbit.
