Scarletbush

Hamelia patens
A fast growing, large shrub or small tree, reaching up to 17 feet in height, that is native to central & southern Florida, much of Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and northern South America. Some records include: largest on record - 25 x 21 feet with a trunk diameter of 0.6 feet.
The elliptical leaves are up to 6 x 3.5 inches in size. The foliage is bright green above, downy gray beneath.
The bright orange-red to scarlet-red, tubular flowers, up to 0.7 inches long, appear during late spring into early summer then often repeating late summer into mid-autumn.
Hardy zones 8 to 11 in full sun to partial shade on light, well drained soil. It is very drought and heat tolerant.
