Panicled Hydrangea

Hydrangea paniculata

An arboreal Hydrangea that can grow large, up to 40 x 40 feet with a trunk diameter up to 2 feet; though usually closer to 15 feet in the U.S. It is native to Sakhalin, southeastern China and Japan.
The toothed, oval leaves, up to 8 x 4.5 inches, are deep green in summer; turning yellow in the fall.
In late summer it is also covered by large, conical panicles of densely packed white flowers.
Hardy zones 3 to 8 in full sun to partial shade on any moist, deep, fertile, well drained soil. When grown as a small tree, it is best to prune to a scaffold of 3 main trunks and prune out lower or cluttered branches. Not prone to pests or disease but deer will sometimes eat the foliage.

'Angel's Blush'
Fast growing and upright, rounded, reaching up to 3.3 x 4 feet in 3 years, to 6 x 8.5 feet in 6 years, eventually to 12 x 10 feet.
The foliage is mid-green.
The abundant, sterile flowers are borne in panicles up to 10 inches in length, during mid-summer into mid-autumn. They are white, later turning to pink then rosy-red.

'Baby Lace'
Moderate growing, dense, sturdy & compact in habit, reaching up to 4 x 4 feet in 5 years, eventually to 4 x 5 feet.
The thick foliage is deep green. The ovate leaves average 3.5 x 2 inches in size.
The lace-cap flowers are white. They are borne in panicles up to 5 x 5 inches in size, that appear late summer into mid-autumn.
Hardy zones 4 to 8, it is highly mildew resistant.

'Berry White'
A vigorous, dense, sturdy, upright shrub, reaching up to 7 x 5 feet in 3 years, eventually more.
The large, elliptical leaves are deep green.
The flowers are borne on dense, huge clusters ( averaging 7 x 5 inches in size ) that are borne on strong stems. They are white during mid-summer, however the flower panicles turn to deep pink to red during late summer into mid-autumn.

'Bobo'
Compact, upright to rounded in habit, reaching up to 2 x 1.8 feet in 3 years, to 3 x 3.3 feet in 6 years, eventually to 4 x 4 ( rarely over 3 ) feet.
The elliptical leaves are up to 3.2 x 1.6 inches in size. The foliage is mid-green.
The white flowers are borne in abundant, large clusters, up to 6 x 5.5 inches in size, from mid-summer into early autumn. The flowers are borne atop sturdy stems.

'Bombshell'
A moderate growing, dense, compact shrub, reaching only 5 x 4 feet in 4 years, with an eventual maximum size of 6 x 6 feet.
The foliage is deep green.
The white ( aging to pink ) flowers are borne on abundant, dense clusters, up to 9 x 4.5 inches in size, from mid-summer until autumn frosts.

'Candelabra'
Upright in habit, reaching up to 8 x 8 feet in 4 years, slightly more at maturity.
The foliage is deep green. The ovate leaves average 4.5 x 2.5 inches in size.
The flower panicles are creamy-white at first, quickly aging to bright red. They appear atop sturdy deep red stems and average 7.5 x 5.5 inches in size.

'Chantilly Lace'
A large shrub, averaging 5.4 x 5.5 feet in 8 years, eventually reaching up to 10 x 10 feet.
The leaves, up to 6 x 4 inches, are glossy very deep green.
The flowers are borne on moderately dense, very large clusters, up to 11 inches in length, from mid-summer to mid-autumn.
They are creamy-white at first, turning to deep pink during autumn.

'Fire & Ice'
Fast growing, sturdy in habit, reaching up to 10 x 10 feet in 4 years, eventually slightly more.
The ovate leaves average 3+ x 1.8 inches in size. It bears large clusters,( averaging 8 x 7 inches ) of flowers that are white, later deepening to pink then deep red.
The flowers persist for over 3 months during summer.
Hardy zones 3 to 8, it is very heat tolerant as well as shade tolerant.

'Fire Light'
Moderate growing, dense, sturdy and upright in habit, reaching up to 5 x 5.3 feet in 4 years, eventually to 8 x 8 feet.
The foliage is bright green at first, later turning to deep green. The ovate leaves are up to 6 x 3 inches in size.
The white flowers quickly turn to deep pink then red. They are borne in large ( up to 16 inches long ) panicles from mid-summer into early autumn. The thick stems hold the flowers well.

'Grandiflora' ( Pee-Gee Hydrangea )
Very vigorous with creamy white sterile flowers borne in huge, dense panicles up to 18 x 12 inches in size.
It can become a very large shrub, reaching up to 25 feet if not pruned. It can also be trained as a dense and broadly-crowned, small tree. Some records include: 24 years - 18 x 21 feet with a trunk diameter of 1.5 feet.
Blooms are largest on plants thinned and pruned back hard in late winter and kept well fertilized.

'Honeycomb'
A fast growing, upright, large shrub to small tree, reaching up to 15 x 7.7 feet. Some records include: 3 years - 12 feet.
The naturally drooping foliage is deep green.
The flowers are borne on huge, pyramidal clusters, up to 12 x 8 inches, atop stiff upright stems, all summer long, persisting into early autumn. They are white, later turning to pink.
Hardy zones 3 +.

'Kyushu'
A moderate growing, upright, medium-sized shrub, averaging 4 x 5.1 feet in 6 years, eventually reaching up to 13 x 13.5 ( rarely over 8 x 6 ) feet.
Extremely glossy deep green foliage.
White flowers borne in abundant, very large clusters, up to 10 inches in length, from July until first fall frost. The flower clusters turn to pink then finally rosy-purple during autumn.
Hardy zones 4 to 8.

'Lavalamp Flare'
Moderate growing, compact, sturdy and upright in habit, reaching up to 3.4 x 3 feet in 4 years, eventually slightly wider.
The deep green foliage contrast nicely with the deep red stems. The toothed, ovate leaves are up to 5 x 2.3 inches in size.
The huge ( up to 9 x 4.7 inches ) upright flower panicles are white, later turning to deep pink.

'Limelight'
Fast growing, sturdy yet graceful in habit, reaching up to 6 x 5 feet in 2 years, 8 x 8.3 feet in 9 years, eventually to 12 x 10 feet or more ( easily pruned smaller ). It makes an excellent focal point as well as a great natural hedge.
The very abundant, huge, flower clusters, up to 12 x 10 inches, are greenish-white to bright lime-green, later turning to rich deep pink. The blooming season last from late July through autumn.
The thick foliage is deep green, turning to yellow-green or less often red-purple during autumn. The ovate leaves average 5 x 3 inches in size though can be larger on vigorous stems.
Hardy zones 3 to 8. Plants cut back 1/3 to 1/2 during early spring are more vigorous and have larger flowers.

'Limelight Prime'
Similar to 'Limelight' but more compact, reaching up to 6 x 6 feet.
The flowers are lime-green at first, turning to white, then to pale pink then finally to reddish-pink. The dense flower panicles are borne atop sturdy stems.

'Little Hottie'
Vigorous ( much more than 'Bobo' ) yet rounded and compact in habit, reaching up to 4 x 4 feet in 4 years, eventually to 5 x 5 feet.
The corrugated leaves are mid-green. The coarsely-toothed, broadly-ovate leaves are up to 3.7 x 2.5 inches in size.
The very full flower heads, up to 11 x 6.2 inches in size, are pale green at first, turning to pure white. Late in the season, the flower panicles may deepen to pale pink. The flowers appear from mid-summer into early autumn, over a period lasting up to 6 weeks.
Hardy zones 3 to 8, it has excellent heat tolerance.

'Little Lamb'
Moderate growing and compact in habit, reaching up to 7 feet in 6 years and an eventual maximum size of 8 x 10 ( rarely over 5 ) feet.
It bears very abundant, sterile, pure white, compact but dense flower clusters up to 7 x 5 inches in size. The blooming season last up to 12 or more weeks from mid summer into early autumn and the flowers eventually fade to pink.
The mid-green foliage turns to yellow-green or sometimes red-purple during autumn. The ovate leaves are up to 4 x 2 inches in size.
Hardy zones 3 to 8, blooming is improved by hard pruning during early spring. Drought and urban tolerant.

'Little Quick Fire'
Vigorous but dense, compact and upright, reaching up to 2.3 x 2.9 feet in 2 years, averaging 3.3 x 4.3 feet in 6 years, eventually to 5 x 5 feet. Some records include: fastest growth rate - 3 feet.
The foliage is luxuriant deep green, often turning orange and red during autumn. The ovate leaves are up to 5 x 3 ( rarely over 4 x 2 ) inches in size.
The white ( later turning reddish-pink then finally red-purple ) flowers are borne on panicles during mid-summer into early autumn. They flower panicles, up to 8 x 6 inches in size, are borne on deep red stems. It is one of the earliest Hydrangea paniculata cultivars to come into bloom.

'Magical Candle'
Vigorous but dense, upright and rounded in habit, reaching up to 2.1 x 2.4 feet in 2 years, eventually to 5 x 5 feet.
The foliage is luxuriant bright green at first, turning to mid-green. The ovate leaves are up to 4 x 2.1 inches in size.
It bears huge, dense flowerheads, up to 6.5 x 5.5 inches in size, that are white ( finally deepening to deep pink during autumn ). It typically blooms during July into September.

'Magical Matterhorn'
Moderate growing, very dense and compact in habit, reaching up to 1.7 x 1.8 feet in 2 years, eventually up to 5 x 4 feet. It is very similar to 'Bobo' in appearance but slightly taller and more upright.
The narrowly-elliptical leaves are up to 3.2 x 1.3 inches in size.
The white flowers are borne in conical panicles up to 6 x 5 inches in size.

'Pee Wee'

'Phantom'
Also called 'Royal Star'. A very fast growing, upright, large shrub to small tree, reaching up to 6.5 x 7.3 feet in 6 years, eventually to 10 x 10 feet.
The attractive, lush foliage is deep green.
The flowers are borne in abundant, huge, dense, conical flowerheads, up to 18 x 8 inches. They are white at first, later turning to pale pink by early autumn.
The flower clusters are borne on very thick, sturdy stems from mid-summer to early autumn.

'Pink Diamond'
An upright, large shrub, reaching up to 6 x 6 feet in 4 years, to 10 x 10 feet in 10 years with an eventual size of 10 x 12 + feet.
The foliage is bright green.
Flowers borne in large pyramidal panicles, up to 12 x 8 inches in size, are pink in bud opening to white then deepening to rich pink to nearly red. The flowers appear mid-summer to mid-autumn.

'Pinky Winky'
Vigorous, dense and upright to rounded in habit, reaching up to 3.3 x 2.5 feet in 2 years, 6.5 x 5.5 feet in 3 years, 8 x 6 feet in 10 years, with an eventual maximum size of 8 x 10 feet. It makes a great natural hedge.
The foliage is deep green. The leaves are up to 6 x 4 inches in size.
The pale pink flowers are borne on huge, upright clusters, up to 16 x 8 ( rarely over 11 x 7 ) inches in size.
Hardy zones 3 to 8, thriving even in North Dakota.

'Praecox'
It flowers early with mostly sterile flowers but the panicles aren't especially large, up to 8 inches in length.
It reaches the same size as regular Hydrangea paniculata.
The foliage turns striking yellow in autumn.

'Quickfire'
A very fast growing, large shrub, reaching up to 3 feet in 2 years, to 8 x 10 feet in 5 years, eventually to 10 feet. Some records include: fastest growth rate - 4.5 feet.
The fragrant flowers are borne on large panicles, up to 12 inches in length, all summer long, persisting into early autumn for a season often exceeding 3 months. They are bright white at first, later turning to mid-pink, then finally rosy-pink.
The stems are reddish.

'Quick Fire Fab'
Fast growing, reaching up to 8 x 8 feet or more.
The ovate leaves are up to 5.5 x 3.5 ( average 4 x 2 ) inches in size.
The flowers appear over a period of up to 3 months, beginning mid-summer into early autumn. The flowers are lime-green turning to deep pink. The huge dense flower clusters, up to 6 x 5.6 inches in size, are among the earliest to appear of all cultivars.

'Strawberry Sundae'
A vigorous but compact, medium-sized shrub, reaching up to 4.3 x 4 feet in 3 years, eventually to 6 x 7.5 ( rarely over 4 x 4 ) feet. It is very similar to H. paniculata 'Vanilla Strawberry' but more dense and compact. Some records include: growth rate - 3.5 feet.
The foliage is mid-green. The oval leaves are up to 5 x 3 inches in size.
The flower panicles, up to 7 x 5 inches in size, are white at first during mid-summer, later turning to reddish-pink. During late summer into mid-autumn, both red and white flowers often appear on the same plant.

The leaves turn to yellow or purple during autumn. The toothed, ovate leaves are up to 6 x 3 inches in size.
The flowers are borne on extremely abundant, upright, dense, broadly-conical clusters, up to 7 x 7 inches in size, from early summer until mid-autumn.
They are white at first, later turning to deep pink. Flower clusters of both colors are often found on the same plant at a time.

'Tardiva'
Moderate growing, it can reach up to 6.5 x 4 feet in 4 years, 10 x 10 feet in 10 years, 15 x 17 feet at maturity.
The deep green foliage turns deep yellow during autumn.
It blooms very late in season, sometimes as late as September, and has white sterile flowers that fade to pink that are borne on very strong stems.
Very hardy, thriving even in Alberta's harsh climate.

'Torch'
Moderate growing, sturdy, compact and upright, reaching up to 2 x 1.6 feet in 2 years, eventually to 5 x 5 feet.
The ovate leaves averaged 3.7 x 1.8 inches in size.
This is the earliest blooming cultivar. The flowers are borne in panicles averaging 3.7 x 4 inches in size. They are white at first during early summer, later turning to deep pinkish-red.

'Unique'
Rounded flower panicles even larger than that of 'Grandiflora' ( up to 16 x 10 inches ). The flowers borne in large, dense clusters, up to 10 x 6 inches, that are white turning to deep pink with age.
A fast growing, dense, domed, large shrub, to small tree, reaching up to 14 feet or more. Some records include: 6 years - 6.5 x 8 feet, 14 years - 11 x 13 feet; 36 years - 15 x 25 feet with a trunk diameter of 15 inches.
The foliage is deep green.

'Vanilla Strawberry'
A large, upright shrub, reaching up to 8 x 5 feet in 5 years, eventually to 10 x 7 ( rarely over 7 ) feet.
It bears huge conical flowerheads, up to 10 x 5 inches in size, that are white during summer, fading to pink-red during autumn. The blooms persist for over 2 months. It often bears blooms of multiple colors as new flower clusters continue to be produced during the summer as others age.
The deep green foliage turns yellow in fall. The elliptical leaves are up to 5 inches in length.

The foliage is glossy deep green.
