Fringe Hazel

Loropetalum chinense

A bushy, dome-shape, evergreen, small tree native to the Himalayas, China & Japan that can reach up to 17 x 17 feet in 10 years and eventually to 33 x 30 feet with a trunk diameter of 2.5 feet. The Fringe Hazel is moderate growing up to 2.5 feet per year with the fastest recorded rates being 6 feet in 2 years from 1 gallon & 14 x 11 feet in 5 years. The largest known tree in the U.S. so far is 30 feet at Aiken, South Carolina. It can be pruned and limbed up to develop an extremely attractive vase shaped upright tree. The Fringe Hazel has a horizontal branching habit and can be trained as an espalier and bonsai.
The leathery, oval leaves, up to 3 x 1 inches in size, are deep green.
Its white slightly fragrant flowers are borne February to March and resembles the Witch Hazel. The bloom season lasts up to 3 weeks.
The flowers are followed by woody capsules.
The bark is grayish-brown.
Not prone to pests or diseases. It is very easy to grow but does prefer a moist, acid, light, fertile, well drained soil in sun to partial shade. Can tolerate full shade and is also very drought tolerant. It can be pruned to shape after blooming. It blooms on second year wood so pruning over fall and winter will sacrifice bloom.
It can be sheared as a hedge however I personally think that would be just plain ugly and would not recommend it. Some plants are much better left to their natural graceful habit rather than as squares and boxes.
Fertilize in early spring. Hardy zones 7 to 9 in full sun to partial shade on moist, acidic, well drained soil that is high in organic matter. It can grow as far north as southeast Pennsylvania but may freeze back to ground and behave more like a perennial at temperatures below 0 F. Loropetalum is sensitive to certain herbicides especially nutsedge killer.
Propagation is from cuttings taken in summer. Softwood and semi-hardwood cuttings taken during summer root easily under mist, 1000 to 3000 ppm IBA in 4 to 6 weeks.
